Summer in business: how to take a proper break without everything falling apart

If you’re a wellness business owner, summer can feel like the most complicated time of year.

On one hand you want to slow down - you want to be present with your kids, enjoy the longer evenings and actually switch off for once.

On the other hand, the thought of stepping away from your business (even for a week or two) brings up a whole load of anxiety…

What if clients need me?

What if my content goes quiet?

What if I come back to a pile of chaos?

Sound familiar?

Here’s the thing: taking a proper break isn’t a luxury. For wellness business owners especially, it’s part of running a sustainable business. And with a little bit of planning, it really is possible to step away without everything falling apart.

Here’s how!

1. Decide what a break actually means for you

Before you do anything else, get clear on what you actually want this summer to look like. Do you want to take two full weeks completely off? Work reduced hours? Be available for urgent things, but protected from the day-to-day?

There’s no right answer, but there is your answer! And knowing it upfront means you can plan around it, rather than just hoping things work out. A lot of business owners skip this step and end up half-working, half-resting…which is honestly the worst of both worlds. You’re not properly present, and you’re not properly off. Give yourself permission to decide what you actually need, and build from there.

2. Tell your clients (and earlier than you think!)

Your clients (whether they see you weekly, fortnightly or ad hoc) rely on your presence and support. A heads up about your summer plans gives them time to prepare, book in any sessions they need before you go, or simply know what to expect.

It also sets a really positive example - as a wellness professional, you talk about rest, boundaries and sustainability. Actually taking a break and communicating it clearly shows your clients that you walk the walk.

Send a simple email, add a note at the end of your next session or post about it on social media. You don’t need to make a big deal of it, but do give people enough notice to feel looked after.

3. Batch and schedule your content in advance

Going quiet on social media over summer can feel counterproductive, especially if you’ve worked hard to build consistency. But you don’t have to choose between taking a break and staying visible…

A few weeks before you go, set aside some dedicated time to batch your content. Write your captions, create your graphics and schedule everything in advance. That way your channels stay active, your audience stays warm, and you’re not reaching for your phone on a sunny afternoon wondering what to post.

4. Set up an out of office that actually works

A clear, warm out of office manages expectations and removes the pressure to respond immediately…for you and your clients.

Keep it on brand and human:

• When you’re away

• When you’ll be back

• What to do if something feels urgent

As a wellness business owner, this is also a brilliant opportunity to model healthy boundaries in action. Your clients will notice, and many will quietly appreciate it.

5. Actually switch off!

This is the hardest part, but also the most important. A break only works if you let yourself rest.

‘quickly’ checking emails, or scrolling through DMs on the beach means your nervous system never fully switches off… And you come back just as depleted as you left.

Give yourself some simple rules before you go:

• No emails before 9am or after 6pm (or at all!)

• Social media goes on mute

• Work chats stay closed

Your business will still be there when you get back. Your summer won’t!!

And if you need a little support before you switch off?

If reading this has made you realise that stepping away feels impossible right now,’that’s worth paying attention to.

Not as a reason to feel bad, but as information.

Because a business that can’t function without you being switched on 24/7 isn’t sustainable, and sometimes a little behind-the-scenes support is all it takes to finally feel like you can breathe.

Whether you need help getting your content scheduled, your inbox managed or just someone to hold things together while you take a well earned rest, that’s exactly what I’m here for.

You deserve a proper summer. Let’s make sure you get one.
